Why Must it be Scripture Alone? The Five Solas of the Reformation

The Reformers wanted to be able to answer one question with proper authority: How can a sinful person be justified before a righteous God?   They concluded that a person is justified through faith alone (sola fide).  They did this by establishing the formal principle of the Reformation—the source for understanding justification through faith alone was sola scriptura, that Scripture alone provides the method for answering the question.
