Old Testament Overview Part 6 -  Life in the Promised Land This Session: Review/Introductions Joshua Judges Ruth I. Review/Introduction The Jewish Bible referred to these early historical books as “the former prophets” (includes Joshua–Kings, excluding Ruth) Luke 24:44 — “in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms” The Former Prophets give a continuous history of Israel in the Land through the eyes of the prophets.  The Latter Prophets indict the Law breaking of Israel / Judah, but also predict Yahweh’s future restoration of Israel.  The Former Prophets will lead us to the monarchy Israel received Yahweh’s blessing only so long as she remained faithful to the stipulations of the Mosaic covenant (cf. Deut. 28). II. Joshua Hebrew: Yehoshua [“The Lord is Salvation”] (related to Yeshua) THEME: Conquer and Divide (Re-Entry).   Old Testament Overview Part 5 - The Giving of the Law This Session: The Exodus The Giving of the Law I. Introduction Last time, we considered the beginnings of Israel It started with God’s calling of Abraham and giving the covenant God renamed Jacob Israel His children would become the twelve tribes. Joseph was sold into slavery, but was able to save their lives in Egypt Israel spent generations in Egypt, growing in number, causing a new Pharoah concern. Because of the enslavement & mistreatment of the children of Israel, God raised up a redeemer. II. The Exodus God ordained plagues: “…against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the LORD” (Exod. 12:12). God ordained Passover: The “Passover” was the death angel passing over and leaving souls alive. The image was that of the blood of the lamb, covering the doorposts. A feast to celebrate deliverance from bondage. This looked forward prophetically to the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29) God ordained passing through:...

SERMON: Old Testament Overview Part 4 - Patriarchs & the Birth of Israel

Image
Old Testament Overview Part 4 - Patriarchs & the Birth of Israel This Session: The Patriarchs The Beginning of Israel I. Introduction Last time, we saw that sin resulted in a real, global flood. This flood affected both geography and civilization. Land formations and archeology give evidence to a global deluge. The reduction of life spans. The flood introduced us to one of the most important themes of Scripture: The Covenant. The Noahic Covenant is unilateral and eternal.  God never flooded the world again! The Abrahamic Covenant is likewise unilateral and eternal.  The Jews cannot lose the land due to disobedience (cf. Gal. 3:17), and it gives all God’s people hope of eternal redemption. II. The Patriarchs Abraham The father of the Jewish nation! Name change to reflect this (Gen. 17): Abram –> Abraham Sarai –> Sarah Each covenant has a sign. Noahic Covenant = Rainbow Abrahamic Covenant = ? Circumcision Even though this was a unilateral covenant, God s...

Old Testament Overview A Twelve Week Trek through the Text Part 3: The Flood and Covenants This Session: The Flood The Noahic Covenant The Abrahamic Covenant I. Introduction Last time, we considered creation according to Scripture. The presentation in the Bible is very different than… …those in ancient near eastern, pagan religions. …that in our current, pagan culture. Science arises from an interpretation of the data that exists.  II. The Flood God judged sin in Genesis 3. In Genesis 4, we see how sin corrupted Cain and his later lineage. The prediction of death is emphasized in the genealogy of chapter five. “So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died ” (v. 5) “So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died ” (v. 8).  “So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died ” (v. 11). Etc. Romans 5:12 — “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin,...
